Asot Michael – Why I´m Running for Parliament: My Vision for Antigua and Barbuda

Asot Michael’s early advocacy efforts, lobbying the government and making contributions on socio-political matters, led to the creation of the country’s University Grants Commission. Also, it led to the establishment of The University of the West Indies, the establishment of the Antigua and Barbuda Social Security Board and The People’s Action Movement. In 2009, Asot Michael ran for the post of Member of Parliament in an Antigua and Barbuda National Elections. He defeated Stephen Liburd in the 2009 general election, the first held under Antigua and Barbuda’s new constitution. This was Michael’s first step in his long journey to the highest office in Antigua and Barbuda.

His Vision and mission for Antigua and Barbuda are that it will “become the first environmentally friendly, socially inclusive and highly effective business environment. Not since the Lancaster House Agreement has Antigua and Barbuda had a prime minister and a government headed by a New Zealander and a Canadian. The high standards set by Asot Michael and Carr as prime ministers, therefore, may serve as a good benchmark for the standards Antigua and Barbuda wants from its current leaders. As those who worked with Asot Michael and Carr indicate, he is a man of high ethical and moral character. Under his tenure, Antigua and Barbuda’s relationship with the United States is arguably the best in its history. Asot Michael has also advanced Antigua and Barbuda’s relations with the European Union, received support from the Caribbean Development Bank, and, more recently.

Asot Michael: We are all equal under God and I am pleased to stand up for and give back to the people who placed their trust in me. I will work for the benefit of the common man; to bring prosperity to the people and to make our country a better place to live. I want Antiguans and Barbudans to enjoy their lives, and live in a state of contentment.

Michael: I want all Antiguans and Barbudans to be proud of our country, and live in a state of peace, harmony, and unity. I want a safe and secure home for our families to raise our children, and live a successful and fulfilled life. I also want to ensure that Antigua and Barbuda has a voice at the Organization of American States (OAS). Asot Michael served as prime minister with goals to spearhead the reconstruction and improvement of Barbuda and Antigua by addressing “impacts” on its infrastructure and increasing economic growth. To improve tourism, strengthen businesses, stimulate and secure development of small and medium enterprises, improve law and order, and further increase the overall quality of life in the country.
