Lacey and Larkin Fight for Those Who Cannot Speak Up

One of the evilest men I have ever heard about it Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona. This vindictive man truly spreads evil and darkness wherever he goes.

The worst part is that he believes that the law and righteousness are on his side. I am grateful to men like Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin who have unearthed the evils he is doing and exposed them to the world that we may get justice.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has continued to terrorize the Hispanic population in Maricopa County for years. One of the evilest things that he has done is to create jail cells in his prisons that he contaminates with disease so that when the Hispanics are put in there, they will become sick.

The reason for this is evil is that underneath Arizona law once an illegal immigrant is detained they lose any rights to go to the hospital. He hoped that they would become sick so he could deny them medical attention so that they would die.

One of the most heartbreaking stories I read was of a pregnant woman who requested to see a doctor but Sheriff Arpaio denied her that right, and she lost the baby. To make matters worse, Sheriff Arpaio denied her the right to see the baby before its funeral. He also raided a Hispanic home one time that he believed to be a drug and weapon cache. However, when he went through, he realized that he was wrong. Most people would just apologize and move on but not Sheriff Arpaio. Instead, he lit the house on fire and burn everything they had accumulated the ground.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin saw these atrocities and began to report them through several media channels such as Village Voice Media and the Phoenix New Times.

Sheriff Arpaio would continue his fascist ways by breaking into the home of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. Under the threat of being sent to one of his jail cells, he demanded that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin turn over all evidence to him. Read more: Jim Larkin | LinkedIn and Michael Lacey | Twitter

These brave men refused to be intimidated, and they stood for what is right. Sheriff Arpaio took them the jail but soon the national news heard of this and the pressure was so great they had to be released.

They would end up suing the Maricopa County and using the money to start the Lacey and Larkin Frontera fund.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have created The Frontera Fund as a way to give back to their local community. After a $3.75 million dollar lawsuit, they have decided to use the money to improve the lives of countless individuals. The lawsuit and the Fund are a result of Joe Arpaio’s illegal actions during his time as Sheriff of Maricopa County.

Who is Joe Arpaio?

For 24 years Joe Arpaio was the Sheriff of Maricopa County. Arpaio is known for his notoriety and infamy. During his time as sheriff he terrorized Maricopa County with his unjust policing techniques. He ordered his deputies to abuse prisoners, target immigrants, and generally use brutal tactics to carry out their jobs. In 2007, he arrested three individuals that resulted in Maricopa County paying out over 70 million dollars in restitutions.

He illegally arrested a Mexican citizen. This incident led to criminal charges being filed against Joe Arpaio. A few months before Arpaio was about to answer for his crimes, Donald Trump pardoned him.

The other two individuals that Arpaio illegally arrested in 2007 was Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. They were merely doing their job at the Phoenix New Times when Joe Arpaio arrested them. Lacey and Larkin were arrested due to exposing Joe Arpaio in their paper. Joe Arpaio violated their first amendment rights by arresting them for their journalism.

The Frontera Fund and Front Page Confidential

The Frontera Fund focuses a majority of its efforts on the Hispanic community. Frontera Fund helps Hispanics because Joe Arpaio targeted them for so many years.

Front Page Confidential is their new outlet to communicate with their readers. They have sold the Phoenix New Times in favor of their new publication. The paper was created a month after Joe Arpaio was pardoned. It publishes content that intends to keep corrupt politicians out of office.

Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund Working Towards Rehabilitating Hispanic Community in Arizona

Even though in macro view the world has been progressing fast and many sectors are developing at a massive pace and scale, in micro opinion, there are still many aspects of human society that needs correction. There are still millions of people going to sleep hungry each day, and much more are dying of hunger and due to lack of clean drinking water and basic sanitation.

Many other issues need to be taken care of, but thanks to the pace in which the world is moving ahead, many of the essential aspects of human civilization are being neglected and missed. These issues, however, are crucial and must be taken care of as it can and would impact the future of the world.

Thankfully, many organizations are working to rehabilitate these people, but it is the onus of the people of the world to help each other and reach out to those that need a helping hand. Until and unless the society as a whole comes together to support those in need, there would always be a few gaps left.

The human rights violations are also increasing around the world, and it is not only limited to the war-stricken zones in the world, especially in the Gulf and Middle Eastern region, but in developed countries like the United Kingdom and the United States as well. The atrocities on the civilians by the police are also something that has been catching the attention of the world media, and it is the frequency of such incidents that is, in particular, more shocking.

Many organizations are working round the clock to rehabilitate the people who are in need of food, shelter, basic sanitation, medical support, financial support, education, and more.

Many of these organizations are also helping the victims of the human rights abuse from around the globe. Few of the most well-known and respected agencies in the field of human rights are Amnesty International, Global Rights, Protection International, Human Rights Trust, Human Rights Watch, International Committee of Red Cross, and more.

One of the most popular human right abuse cases that were reported in the United States recently was the arrest of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, co-owners of Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. They were arrested without any valid reasons by the Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, who is regarded as one of the most controversial sheriffs in the country. Read more: Jim Larkin | LinkedIn

However, their arrest didn’t last long and was released within twenty-four hours itself as there was a national uproar due to their wrongful arrest. After release, they filed a lawsuit against the state, which they won comfortably along with $3.75 million in settlement amount.

The settlement amount was made into Frontera Fund that supports migrant rights, works towards the rehabilitation of Hispanic community, and helps many organizations that work towards the same cause.

Some of the agencies that are supported by Frontera Fund are Arizona Justice Project, American Immigration Council. Aliento, Promise Arizona, No More Deaths, SySTEM Phoenix, Center for Neighborhood Leadership, and more.

The Efforts of Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund to Improve the Lives of Immigrants

Minority communities such as immigrants have been affected by injustices in Arizona for decades. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund protects the rights of this individuals by funding different activist groups in the state.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin started the organization to ensure that Hispanic immigrants were not oppressed by unconstitutional laws that targeted them. The two philanthropists are journalists, and they were arrested in 2007 for writing articles that exposed the rogue activities of Joe Arpaio, who was the sheriff of Maricopa County.

Their detention was illegal and since it did not respect their First Amendment rights. In 2013, a judge ordered the Maricopa County to give them $3.75 million as settlement fees. The money enabled the two individuals to continue with their mission of protecting immigrants by founding the Lacey and Larking Frontera Fund.

The organization’s donations have currently benefited different Arizona-based groups. Justice for Immigrants and Families has received donations from the fund. The group has led campaigns to make it easy for immigrants to access justice. The population of undocumented people living in the Arizona is over 325,000, and most of them cannot afford to pay for an attorney. Many immigrants used to be prosecuted without being represented by lawyers before the establishment of the organization. JIF provides legal services to immigrants and has partnered with various pro bono lawyers who handle their cases.

The foundation has been creating awareness about immigrant rights through orientations, conferences, legal consultations, and group workshops. It also empowers communities across Arizona by working with various groups. Justice for Immigrants and Families ensures that everyone gets a chance to enjoy social and economic privileges.

JIF was the brainchild of the Phoenix Legal Action Network, which is an institution that was founded by lawyers. The attorneys volunteer to handle pro bono cases that face immigrants, women, LGBTQ individuals, and racial minorities.

The legal professionals have also been supporting voting rights, reforms in criminal justice, freedom of speech, and accountability in the police department.

The charity undertakings of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have also benefited Promise Arizona (Paz). The foundation was created in 2010 to campaign against the enactment of SB 1070. Many members of the Hispanic community were harassed after the implementation of the law.

Paz was made up of believers of different faiths, and they prayed for 103 days to stop the mistreatment of the immigrants. The court later abolished the SB 1070 law. Paz’s efforts forced the Obama administration to make improvements in the immigration sector.
